Garden of Tears Inaugurated as Families Commemorate Home for Human Rights Founder’s 10th Death Anniversary
Vattrapallai, Mullaitivu – 10 June 2026
Approximately 200 participants, including families of victims of enforced disappearance from eight districts, human rights defenders, community representatives, civil society activists, and well-wishers, gathered today at Vattrapallai, Mullaitivu, to inaugurate the Garden of Tears and commemorate the 10th death anniversary of Mr. I. F. Xavier, Founder of Home for Human Rights, together with members of his family and The Social Architects (TSA).
The Garden of Tears was established in memory of Mr. Xavier as a community-owned memorial and healing space for war-affected communities, with a focus on remembering the past to protect the future. The initiative seeks to preserve memory, honour the dignity of victims, and provide families with a place for reflection, remembrance, collective healing, and hope.
The ceremony commenced with tributes to Mr. Xavier (25 July 1933 – 10 June 2016), whose lifelong commitment to justice, human rights, and support for affected communities continues to inspire many. A memorial stone dedicated to his memory was unveiled in recognition of his contribution to defending the rights of marginalized communities and advocating for truth, justice, and accountability. This was followed by the official opening of the Garden of Tears through the unveiling of the garden’s name stone and the lighting of lamps around the spiral memorial structure at the centre of the garden.
Following the official inauguration, families from different districts planted memorial trees in honour of their loved ones who remain missing, some for nearly forty years, without truth or answers regarding their fate or whereabouts. Each tree stands as a living symbol of memory, resilience, and the continuing quest for truth, justice, and acknowledgment. For the families, the trees represent both remembrance and hope— the enduring expectation of one day learning what happened to their loved ones and receiving answers from the State.
The tree-planting ceremony was followed by a dramatic performance portraying the multidimensional challenges faced by families of the disappeared, including the social, economic, psychological, and legal hardships that continue long after the disappearance itself.
The Garden carries the message, “Remember the Past, Protect the Future,” reflecting the collective determination of families and communities to ensure that the pain, suffering, and divisions caused by war are neither forgotten nor repeated.
As participants gathered around the newly planted trees and memorial spaces, the event served not only as a commemoration of loss and remembrance but also as a reaffirmation of hope, solidarity, and the enduring commitment to safeguarding human dignity, preserving memory, and pursuing truth and justice for future generations.

வலிந்து காணாமல் ஆக்கப்பட்டோரின் குடும்பங்களைச் சேர்ந்த ஒன்பது மாவட்டங்களிலிருந்து (வடகிழக்கு மற்றும் மலையகம்) வந்த உறவினர்கள், மனித உரிமை செயற்பாட்டாளர்கள், சமூக பிரதிநிதிகள், சிவில் சமூக அமைப்புகளின் உறுப்பினர்கள் மற்றும் நலன் விரும்பிகள் உள்ளிட்ட சுமார் 200 ற்கும் அதிகமான பேர் இன்று முல்லைத்தீவு மாவட்டத்தின் வற்றாப்பளையில் ஒன்றுகூடி “கண்ணீர்களின் சோலை” திறப்பு விழாவிலும் மனித உரிமைகள் இல்லத்தின் (Home for Human Rights) ஸ்தாபகர் திரு. ஐ. எப். சேவியர் அவர்களின் 10ஆம் ஆண்டு நினைவு நாள் நிகழ்விலும் பங்கேற்றனர். இந்நிகழ்வில் அவரது குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்களும், சமூக சிற்பிகள் (The Social Architects – TSA) அமைப்பினரும் கலந்து கொண்டனர்.
திரு. சேவியர் அவர்களின் நினைவாக உருவாக்கப்பட்ட கண்ணீர்களின் சோலை, போரால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட சமூகங்களுக்கான சமூக உரிமையுள்ள நினைவகமாகவும் உளவள ஆற்றுப்படுத்தலுக்கான இடமுமாக உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. “கடந்த காலத்தை நினைவில் கொண்டு, எதிர்காலத்தைப் பாதுகாப்போம்” என்ற நோக்கத்துடன் அமைக்கப்பட்ட இம்முயற்சி, நினைவுகளைப் பாதுகாப்பதையும், பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்களின் கண்ணியத்தை மதிப்பதையும், குடும்பங்களுக்கு சிந்தனை, நினைவு, ஆறுதல் மற்றும் நம்பிக்கைக்கான ஒரு இடத்தை வழங்குவதையும் நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டுள்ளது.
1933 ஜூலை 25 ஆம் தேதி பிறந்து, 2016 ஜூன் 10 ஆம் தேதி காலமான திரு. ஐ. எப். சேவியர் அவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சலி செலுத்தப்பட்டு நிகழ்வு ஆரம்பமானது. நீதி, மனித உரிமைகள் மற்றும் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்கான அவரது வாழ்நாள் அர்ப்பணிப்பு பலருக்கும் தொடர்ந்தும் ஊக்கமளித்து வருகிறது. சமூகத்தில் ஓரங்கட்டப்பட்ட மக்களின் உரிமைகளைப் பாதுகாப்பதிலும், உண்மை, நீதி மற்றும் பொறுப்புக்கூறலுக்காக குரல் கொடுத்ததிலும் அவர் ஆற்றிய பங்களிப்பை நினைவுகூரும் வகையில் நினைவுக் கல் திறந்து வைக்கப்பட்டது.
அதனைத் தொடர்ந்து கண்ணீர்களின் சோலையின் பெயர்ப்பலகை திறந்து வைக்கப்பட்டதுடன், அதன் மையத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள சுழல் வடிவ நினைவுக் கட்டமைப்பைச் சுற்றி விளக்கேற்றி கண்ணீர்களின் சோலை உத்தியோகபூர்வமாக திறந்து வைக்கப்பட்டது.
உத்தியோகபூர்வ திறப்பு நிகழ்வைத் தொடர்ந்து, பல்வேறு மாவட்டங்களைச் சேர்ந்த குடும்பங்கள் வலிந்து காணாமல் ஆக்கப்பட்ட தங்களது அன்புக்குரியவர்களின் நினைவாக மரக்கன்றுகளை நட்டனர். சில குடும்பங்கள் நாற்பது ஆண்டுகளுக்கு அண்மையாகியும் தங்கள் அன்புக்குரியவர்களின் நிலை மற்றும் இருப்பிடம் தொடர்பாக எந்த உண்மையையோ பதிலையோ பெறாமல் காத்திருக்கின்றனர். இம்மரங்கள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் நினைவு, மனவலிமை, உண்மைக்கான தேடல், நீதிக்கான போராட்டம் மற்றும் அங்கீகாரத்திற்கான கோரிக்கையின் உயிர்ப்புள்ள அடையாளங்களாக விளங்குகின்றன. குடும்பங்களுக்கு இம்மரங்கள் நினைவின் சின்னங்களாக மட்டுமன்றி, ஒருநாள் தங்களது அன்புக்குரியவர்களுக்கு என்ன நடந்தது என்பதை அறியவும், அரசிடமிருந்து பதிலைப் பெறவும் உள்ள நம்பிக்கையின் அடையாளங்களாகவும் அமைகின்றன.
மரநடுகை நிகழ்வைத் தொடர்ந்து, காணாமல் ஆக்கப்பட்டோரின் குடும்பங்கள் எதிர்கொள்ளும் பல்வேறு சமூக, பொருளாதார, உளவியல் மற்றும் சட்டரீதியான சவால்களை எடுத்துரைக்கும் நாடக நிகழ்ச்சி அரங்கேற்றப்பட்டது.
“கடந்த காலத்தை நினைவில் கொண்டு, எதிர்காலத்தைப் பாதுகாப்போம்” என்ற செய்தியை தாங்கியுள்ள கண்ணீர்களின் சோலை, போரினால் ஏற்பட்ட வலி, துயரம் மற்றும் பிளவுகள் மறக்கப்படாமலும் மீண்டும் நிகழாதவாறும் இருப்பதை உறுதி செய்யும் குடும்பங்களின் மற்றும் சமூகங்களின் கூட்டு உறுதியை பிரதிபலிக்கிறது.
புதியதாக நடப்பட்ட மரங்களையும் நினைவிடங்களையும் சுற்றி ஒன்று கூடிய பங்கேற்பாளர்களுக்கு, இந்நிகழ்வு ஒரு நினைவேந்தல் நிகழ்வாக மட்டுமல்லாமல், நம்பிக்கை, ஒற்றுமை மற்றும் மனித கண்ணியத்தைப் பாதுகாக்கும் உறுதியின் மீளுறுதிப்பாடாகவும், நினைவுகளைப் பேணுவதற்கும், உண்மை மற்றும் நீதியைத் தேடும் முயற்சியை தொடர்வதற்குமான அர்ப்பணிப்பாகவும் அமைந்தது.
