TORONTO’S NEWLY ELECTED MAYOR OLIVIA CHOW

Share

Olivia Chow, Toronto’s third female mayor has won votes 37% of Torontonians votes on June 26, 2023; crushing the mayoral race with Ana Bailao in just second place!. Chow, who served as the New Democratic Party member of parliament for Trinity-Spadina from 2006 to 2014 as well the Metro Toronto’s city councillor from 1992 to 1998 has won her way into becoming Toronto’s new mayor.

Chow’s main priorities as Mayor lies on affordable housing and Toronto’s housing crisis for the community. Chow hopes to help enable the City of Toronto to build twenty-five thousand new rental homes in the next decade. Olivia Chow, who immigrated to Toronto at just 13 years old, describes her sorrows of seeing Toronto being unaffordable in this day and age, after her mother tirelessly worked as a hotel maid but still could barely manage to pay rent on a single income.

She expresses her understanding as she mentioned her family would not have survived today in the housing system, traffic, childcare, and recreation programs today. Her connection to the struggles of not being able to have money for food or just barely get by on rent is what influenced her to empower communities and dedicate her work to focus on the crisis of the city. As the new mayor, Chow resonates with the challenges the citizens of Toronto face, and pledges a better and sustainable future ahead. We as Torontonians hope that Olivia Chow’s promises and commitment will bring Toronto back to the affordable city it once was again!
