Share

On Saturday, October 26, 2024, the Chinese Cultural Centre in Scarborough was transformed into a vibrant celebration of Tamil culture, setting the stage for Thanujan Devadas’ highly anticipated miruthanga arangetram. With meticulously crafted decorations that evoked the warmth and authenticity of a traditional Tamil Cultural Centre, the atmosphere was electric, drawing a crowd of 600 + attendees eager to witness this special occasion.

Thanujan, a Grade 9 Student at Upper Canada College, a dedicated disciple of Shri Vasuthevan Rajalingam, who has mentored over 100 successful students to perform arangetrams, delivered a performance that was nothing short of exceptional. His mastery of the miruthangam, especially considering it was his stage debut, left the audience in awe. The precision, passion, and skill with which he played were remarkable, showcasing the depth of his training under such a respected guru. It was hard to believe this was Thanujan’s first public performance, as he played with the poise and confidence of a seasoned artist.

The performance was further elevated by the talented musical ensemble that supported Thanujan, with the rhythm section providing a dynamic foundation. Renowned Indian Playback singer Sathyapragash’s soulful vocals brought an added layer of emotion to the performance, taking the show to new heights and keeping the audience mesmerized throughout.

The full house was thoroughly immersed in the evening’s performance, staying engaged and enthusiastic from start to finish. The night concluded with a sumptuous buffet dinner, where guests shared in the joy of the occasion and celebrated Thanujan’s accomplishments.

Thanujan’s parents, Vina and Vasuki Devadas, both practicing lawyers in Scarborough, were visibly proud and delighted by the evening’s success. Their gratitude was evident as they thanked everyone who contributed to making this event possible, from the musicians to the attendees. They were particularly moved by the overwhelming turnout and the outpouring of support, making this arangetram a truly memorable and meaningful celebration for their family and the Tamil community.

In a bid to encourage other like minded community members to follow suit, Devadas family donated $25,000 at the event to the upcoming Tamil Community Centre, a long felt need by the Tamil Community.

It was a night to remember, filled with music, joy, and cultural pride, marking the beginning of a bright musical journey for Thanujan.
